This project for a graceful and nuanced refresh, refurbishment and extension to a Victorian terraced house sits a stone’s throw away from London Fields park, a popular recreational space in the heart of London Borough of Hackney.
The brief includes a side kitchen extension on the ground floor, semi open plan layout for dining and entertaining, a new master suite upstairs and an overall refurbishment of the house. Breathing a new lease of life into the house and bringing the fixtures and fittings up to date was done while respecting the original features and making only the necessary interventions. Site reclaimed and externally sourced second hand bricks were used to construct the kitchen extension, which contains two discreet glazing elements to link interior and exterior together - pivot door and a glass window seat. It provides for the perfect balance between openness and privacy and creates a comfortable and serene ambience to juxtapose against the hustle and bustle of the city.
Beyond aesthetics, sustainable, responsible and respectful design is embedded into the core of the project. The project fulfills the clients’ brief while also being mindful of its surroundings, the privacy of its neighbours and the preservation of the character of the building. The sensitive and sensible approach to design which the practice prides itself on shines through regardless of the scale or the budget of the project.
