We’ve been tasked with developing a concept for extensive renovation and reconfiguration of a detached 1960’s house in a leafy Hertfordshire town. Away from constraints of Central London, the house sits in the middle of a generous suburban site carving out distinct amenity spaces for different parts of a day or a year. The street facing front elevation is given a facelift to create symmetry and rhythm. Meanwhile the private back part of the house undergoes a radical transformation through the addition of two identical double storey extensions covered in charred timber skin to house additional bathrooms, home office and utility spaces. The contrasting character of each side of the house and each part of the plot is the result of the architectural concept of juxtaposition.
